As you can see, about mid-Nov I started losing my momentum and started gaining. It was the beginning of an unraveling that culminated at the end of the year. As I look at the numbers, it felt like more than it really was. I had tried to follow the THM principles, but always hanging over my head was the idea of needing to go dairy free. It is really hard to do THM dairy free (at least, using the recipes in the book and all over the internet). It is a lot of work to cut dairy out of your diet if you aren't trying to separate your carbs and fats. But the anxiety of thinking about dairy free bled into other areas of my life. Once I was kicked out of the contest, all shreds of motivation were gone and by Christmas I was pretty much where I started.

At the beginning of the contest, we were exercising as a family. By the end of Oct, Matthew's PT test was passed and no longer a motivation for working out. Our family exercise challenge fell away and that was the end of my physical output too. My left heel has been bothering me for a few months, but it was getting worse. By mid-December my knees started aching as well as all my other joints (like arthritic), and between my foot and joints it hurt to move.  I began feeling depressed as well. Sugary Christmas treats were in abundance in my belly at that point, and I don't know if it was the sudden increase of sugar or just general lack of good nutrition that started causing problems. Circular reasoning is hard to find the beginning in. I'm not sure if hormone fluctuations were causing mental issues or if the not eating right was causing me to not feel right or if they were just feeding each other.

As I write this today, the knee pains are pretty much gone and I can walk a bit easier. I tried some plantar fascia inserts and they worked for about a week and then I started getting the knee pain. I took the inserts out and things started improving again (so maybe that was the cause of the knee problems), but I also stopped eating as much sugar to see if I could detox from it and get better. Again, who knows where the cause and effect truly lie. I still have not done any official exercising, but I am back on the THM wagon and trying to do dairy sparingly. It still haunts me and I'm tempted to cut the whole family off from dairy instead of just me and P, but I'm trying not to let that thought become debilitating. We've started a new contest as of last week - Work your Adipose Off (or something to that effect). So far I've been able to follow THM like I'd like, but also give myself grace.

NO SISSY Weigh in Week 4

Week 4: 165.6 (.4 lb loss)
Week 3: 166.0 (.9 lb loss)
Week 2: 166.9 (.2 lb loss)
Week 1: 167.1 (2.7 lb loss)
Start: 169.8

I've been feeling it all week. I think my hormones are changing and bloating was setting in. Monday I was 165.3. It's crazy how I always weigh less on Mondays. I think I'm going to add Mondays weight next to that week's weigh-in and see the difference:

Week 4: 165.6 (.4 lb loss)/ 165.3 (0 loss)
Week 3: 166.0 (.9 lb loss)/165.3 (.5 lb loss)
Week 2: 166.9 (.2 lb loss)/165.8 (1.8 lb loss)
Week 1: 167.1 (2.7 lb loss)/167.6 (3.3 lb loss)
Start: 169.8/170.9

Um yeah... big difference. My feeling is that after such a big loss at the beginning it isn't logical (or good) to continue loosing at such a rapid pace. I think it is hard on the body. Yes, I've been off plan a bit but I think the weight loss has slowed just because of the big jumps at the beginning of the month. But this week would be my first freebie otherwise.

I also think it is because of the increase in milk products in my diet :/ I really think I need to cut dairy out, but I am having a hard time giving it up again. Mostly it is due to the ease of grabbing yogurt from the fridge or all the recipes that require it. *sigh* I keep tellling myself that I'm going to go dairy free that day and then don't. Jared is funny because I think he wants me to be successful more than I do. He keeps saying I need to run the track with him and go dairy free.

NO SISSY! Weigh-in Week 3

Week 3: 166.0 (.9 lb loss)
Week 2: 166.9 (.2 lb loss)
Week 1: 167.1 (2.7 lb loss)
Start: 169.8

I weighed less the day before. I'm thinking Thursdays just aren't my best day. But, I did make my .5 lb loss. Julie gave me a .1 oz grace when taking in to account I hadn't nursed Peter yet, so I don't owe a $1 this week :p I really was better this week at being good. I ate on plan pretty much all week. We had the Freschetta pizza again Wed night, but I was good!! I made an on plan bread that I used for the crust and took the toppings off. It actually tasted really good, so I ate three pieces of it! Today (Thursday) I didn't do as well by the end of the day. I think I ended up giving in to stress eating because the day was so out of my norm. By the end of night I ate three fully sugar laden pumpkin cookies with real milk on top of a s'more and two roasted marshmallows, as well as jello salad. I was pretty sugared out just after the jello, which I'd had first, but I gave in to the temptation on the other things.

I really need to up my exercise routine, which is really nothing at this point. My left heel/foot has been bothering me for weeks now and it is the biggest reason (excuse). I couldn't sleep this morning after getting up at 3:18 to potty. I thought about doing an exercise video but didn't want to wake myself up too much b/c I have a late night, but the longer I laid in bed the more awake I felt until I decided to get up and do this. I'm hoping I can go back to bed and get a little more sleep though because part of me is really tired.

NO SISSY Week 2

Week 2: 166.9 (.2 lb loss)
Week 1: 167.1 (2.7 lb loss)
Start: 169.8

I didn't do so great this week. Monday I had dropped another pound, but by today's weigh in I had had too many crossovers the last few days. Wed nights have become pizza night, and I bought a new brand this week. Oh man. Freschetta crusts are just the way I like it. Bad, bad.... under the original rules of the competition, I should have been eliminated but Julie has allowed one freebie week so I am still in the game for now. I owe $1 to the pot as well. So, is time to be good.

NO SISSY weigh in Week 1

Week 1: 167.1 1.6% and 2.7 lbs lost
Start: 169.8

Not bad for my first week. I guess THM is working for me. I have upped my activity level a little bit as well, but it really is a little bit. Two of those pounds came off between Thursday and Monday but I started adding a twenty minute walk to my day the week before. I've also been participating in our family sit up and push up challenge every night. My arms are still pretty flabby but they are getting stronger. The most I've managed to do is 25. It's rough. As part of the contest I've participated in a plank challenge as well. Today was 1 minute. I only dropped a knee once at like 45 sec which is pretty good considering I also did the 25 pushups earlier and my arms were still sore.

I don't know if I'll be able to continue losing at this momentum. I think it's normal to see a big drop in the beginning when you make big changes. Today was harder for me to stay on plan. We had pizza for dinner last night and I was fine with being off plan to eat it, but then we had it again tonight and I couldn't quit eating from lunch on. So I need to do better tomorrow.

N) SISSY Weight loss contest

It is that time of year again. Instead of the usual annual Lettuce Eat Cake contest, Julie is trying a NO SISSY contest. Weigh in is every Thursday for 12 weeks. Each week you don't lose at least 1 lb, you owe a $1. If you don't lose at least .5 lb, you're out. The winner is the one with the highest percentage lost and gets the pot. We start today.

Weigh in - 169.8

I have been wanting to kick start my health habits, so this should help. I am attempting to follow the Trim Healthy Mama program. I was following it last year this time and was most successful once I cut dairy out of my diet. I added it back in for my birthday and haven't slowed down since. I am hoping that maybe I can try again but be more reasonable and not have to cut the dairy. However, I am prepared to do dairy free if I need to.

The basic premise of Trim Healthy Mama (THM) is that you separate your meals by 3 hours and into carbs (E or Energizing) and fats (S or Satisfying). As a general rule, the two fuels should not be combined. It is a whole foods, no sugar, eat until you're satisfied 'diet'. In place of sugar, stevia, xylitol, and erythol are recommended. I choose to use coconut sugar and monk fruit for my sweeteners though I will occasionally use stevia packets. Wheat based flours should be ground from sprouted grains or sourdough.

At this point I am not in 100%, but the basic premise of separating fuels and 3 hrs between meals is my goal.

As for exercise, we have been doing pushups and situps at the end of the day as a family. My arms and stomach muscles are getting stronger but my legs want to be strengthened too. I am dealing with a painful left heal (probably plantar fascias or whatever that term is) which makes it challenging. I bought new running shoes a couple of weeks ago and did not want to use them for every day use, but I broke them out today because something needed to change. It has helped my foot feel better to be in good shoes today. Now I just need to figure out how I will use my time to exercise.

So, for better or worse (hopefully better) time to up my game in all areas of my life!

Let's bring it!

Week 2 weigh in

Start - 196.7
Week 1 - 194.2
Week 2 - 193.8

Another loss! It wasn't much, but this was a hard week and better than nothing. I had a lot of cravings besides the fact we had family in town. Amazingly, today I had 67 calories at the end of the day plus the 500 for nursing. We did the 2 mile walk around the neighborhood and then I did a bunch of shopping so I racked up quite the calorie burn. In fact, this was the best I've done with the fitbit and my step count. I was headed for bed and decided to check my steps and I was just 300 shy of 10K, so I decided to walk back and forth through the house until I reached my goal. Yay  me!

I feel ready to start the C25K again. It seems I started quite the trend in NJ when I made LC my running buddy. She's been going full speed since I quit and has even motivated MP. Now RV has decided she wants to do it too. I told her she could be my buddy. She's going to start on Thurs. I'd like to start tomorrow, but I don't have a phone that can run the app or play list. I'm on a mission to find my Dad's. Getting a smartphone has become an obsession almost.

And over the last week I can tell that walking has totally turned my PPD around. I feel so much more like my old self. It's nice. Things that would have been totally overwhelming now seem like no big deal (like opening up a closet door). Amazing what a bit of exercise and friendshipping does for me!

Week 1 weigh in

Start - 196.7
Week 1 - 194.2

2.5 pounds down! Woohoo!

Yesterday we walked 2 miles for about 45 min. It was raining and hailing this morning so we didn't go today though I still have plans to do something. For the moment I am cleaning house in prep for a visit from Matthew's sister and bro in law tomorrow.

Breaking Out - Lettuce Eat Cake 2014

After some discussion with my friend Julie, we decided to startup the Lettuce Eat Cake contest now instead of in January. We both desperately needed some motivation now. The contest started Tues morning. I was not really mentally ready to start, but did it anyway.

Starting Weigh in - 196.7

I bought a fitbit one on Tues to help me keep track of how active I really am being. Yesterday I walked a whopping 2K steps (the goal is 10k), but my hope is that I will get better. In fact, I finally reached out to people to see if anyone wanted to walk with me. I got a decent response and this morning was our first excursion.

We met at the church parking lot at 9 am and then walked the neighborhood. I mapped a route last night, but we ended up getting a little lost. It worked out well in the end though because we went even farther than I'd marked. My legs were even burning a bit by the time we got back. The pace was decent and I certainly worked up a sweat. Here's the final stats:

Distance - 1.8 miles
Time - 36 minutes
Pace - 2.9 mph

We decided we'd meet every day with the expectation that not everyone would be there every day. Today's weather was just right and with the fall season approaching this may be a really good time to start.

The exercise and socializing was just what I needed :)

This week - Valerie 1: Bed 1

I did it! I am so proud of myself! I fought the bed, and I won!

I woke up at 4:30 to go to the bathroom and lay back in bed realizing I couldn't go back to sleep. I laid there thinking about getting up to exercise. I thought about my beloved P90x and longed to feel so limber and stretched out, but as I went through the routine in my head I just couldn't bring myself to do jumping jacks. I thought about my other beloved 20 minute video. I thought about how last night I was so sick and dizzy and still a felt a little bit like that and wondered if being vertical was really that great of an idea. In the end, I decided to try. I got up, got dressed, took Aaron's laundry basket downstairs, grabbed an apple, water bottles, and my shoes and headed to the basement. I switched out the laundry and turned on the Wii. I weighed in (183 - still not bad for two months of random exercising) and thought about doing some Wii Fit exercises but decided I didn't get enough bang for my buck. I bit the bullet and put in CardioX video and put on my shoes while I waited for it to cycle to the beginning. Um, disc error. Score? I turned it off and headed to the main floor and the computer and found a 30 minute exercise video on YouTube. Perfecto!

I didn't break a sweat, but I worked my muscles and got my heart rate up. I feel energized and good. This particular producer has three different videos so I will either rotate them every day or do three a week as I hoped with my goals. Well, who am I kidding? If I do all three in a week whether it is every day or every other day will be a miracle :) But I really do need to quit being lazy about this b/c my body is paying for it. I took a picture to post last week or the week before and I haven't posted it yet (Obviously).

Matthew came down as I was finishing the last of my workout a little before 6. It was nice having a little bit of quiet coherent time with him.

It did feel really good to exercise though. What finally got me out of bed was thinking that I could always take a nap later. I am starting to feel the crash, but a nap will have to wait at this point.

C25K2 W1 D2/Summer Challenge Final Weigh-in

Week 1 - 5 min warm-up/cool down 60 sec run, 90 min walk for 20 minutes/8 intervals

1.45 mi/1.92 mi total

Today was harder due to a lack of sleep last night. On Monday as I was running with my new partner, I realized that the chubby jones podcast is short two running intervals :( She quits at 6 while the other c25k apps do 8 making a 5 minute difference in the overall program. I verified it today by simultaneously playing her podcast and a c25k app that would notify me at the interval changes. Unfortunately they weren't synchronized so she saying to run or walk while I was still doing the opposite, but I finished at exactly the startup of the next week's run (as in, the warm up for the next podcast finished as I finished the cool down). One of the things I LOVE about her podcast is her pep talks and countdowns. The app just gives an indication of when to change so I don't have the mental prep to know to when to slow down or speed up. I will have to tweak to see if I can get the programs to sync. The podcast plays as a music file so I might be able to go in and pause it or restart it while the app is playing. The advantage to this knowledge is that I think overall my performance will improve. I'll be prepared from the beginning to go the distance.

Friday I will be running on my own due to an early appointment. I look forward to running the neighborhood and comparing my progress on familiar ground :)

**********

week 13 179.0
week 12 181.2
week 11 180.1
week 10 180.1
week 9 182.3
week 8 181.9
week 7 182.3
Week 3: 174.6
Week 2: 175.9
Week 1: 176.6

Yesterday was the final check-in for the summer challenge. I am finally headed in the right direction. I had kind of plateaued but broke the 180 barrier. *whew* Hopefully I can keep it up. The funny thing is that yesterday I even felt smaller, though I don't think it really is noticeable.

I am toying with the raw food idea again - at least more of a whole foods approach/more greens and different milk products (nondairy). I have coconut chunks in the fridge that I'd planned on making milk out of, but then was reminded about coconut butter and am debating which I want to do. In the meantime, I opened a can of coconut milk to use in my smoothies instead of regular milk and have almonds soaking to make almond milk. I miss the rich taste of the regular milk but it works. I don't know if it will be any more economical, but I like feeling self sufficient in that regard.

Monday I felt so good after my run and decided to do a smoothie for lunch instead of my usual sandwich or leftovers. By the time Matthew walked through the door I was an emotional wreck. I'd had a rough afternoon with Jared and his homework and finally lost it when I put dinner on the table and Aaron complained that he didn't like any of the food. I had to put myself in time out. I think the smoothie for lunch was not enough to sustain me, and as a consequence, I was out of control. (Maybe that's why I dropped a couple pounds for my weigh in too ;))

Yesterday I had my usual smoothie in the morning then went to my scripture class. I had planned on running errands afterwards, but thought to call a sister who lives near the church to offer to help her with her kids. She has a new baby and two young ones at home. She took me up on the offer as her husband is out of town and only got two hours of sleep the night before. I needed to eat lunch before I tackled the task of entertaining the kids and fast food really didn't sound appealing. I had to do an errand at a grocery store so I browsed their deli/market section and felt like everything was over priced so ended up with fast and easy food: an orange and greek yogurt with granola. It did a decent job of holding me over the two hours I had with the kiddos before getting home and eating a snack. I was really craving the crunch of tortilla chips so I had some chips with eggplant salsa (yummy). I probably ended up over eating at dinner (coconut shrimp, wild rice w/ cranberries, and wax beans).

I have been thinking about going back to being truly accountable for what I stick in my mouth, but I've realized I spend more time thinking about food when I do. I am always in the kitchen trying to figure out what I am going to eat whereas now, for the most part, I eat and move on. For now I am working on adding variety to my diet.

Couch to 5K Week 7 day 2/Weigh In

Just a quick update before my day gets busy and I forget.

Today was hard. H. A. R. D. hard. I am really sore from yesterday's legs & back workout added on top of being tired and high humidity in the air when I ran, it was a nasty combo. My pace was a lot slower and I really wanted to give up early on, but I persevered and made it.

My optimism from Mon was totally squished and negative. I know it is only b/c today was so challenging and the positive will return, but for now it feels like doing this 5k is the hardest thing in the world (which it isn't/won't be).

I am spending the day walking around New York with one of my TX friends. I am looking forward to being with her but my body does not feel ready for the demands placed on it today....

Oh, and I didn't lose anything this week. Still 180.1. And my measurements have not changed. If anything they've gotten bigger :/

Summer challenge Week 10 Weigh in

week 10 180.1
week 9 182.3
week 8 181.9
week 7 182.3
Week 3: 174.6
Week 2: 175.9
Week 1: 176.6

Well, when I consider that 3 months ago I was four pounds lighter, it feels discouraging to be 180 but the fact that I am down two pounds is good. I weighed the exact same on Saturday so the consistency is also encouraging. I think I may be in better physical shape at this point even if the actual weight is greater.

Today I went for it and did the Shoulders & Back p90X video as well as the Ab Ripper X. The whole time he tells us to set goals and write it down. Well, I didn't write it down but I know I can improve. I used a resistant band instead of dumb bells though I would have liked having weights for freer movement. Ab Ripper was hard. I did a lot of modifying because my core just isn't strong enough to make it through the number of reps or even some of the basic moves. But, I will get stronger and eventually be able to do it all. My shoulders and arms are feeling weak at this point.

I was typing this last night and fell asleep. This morning I am definitely feeling it. My abs hurt and my arms. Going to stretch out the kinks and hit the ground running!

CardioX and weigh in

Man I am pooped. I got up at 7ish and did CardioX. Man I love that workout :) I feel so much more limber when I am done. Then I went to work and spent 5 hours shampooing carpets. So glad to be home with day light left, but I am too tired to enjoy it.

Today's weigh in was disappointing too: 182.3 Back to what I was two weeks ago :/ I am hoping it is water retention and the small rise before the fall. Probably I need to actually count my calories. More than likely I am sneaking in too many snacks like crackers, and I doubt my exercise calories are accurate either.

Couch to 5k Week 4/Week 8 weigh in

Summer Challenge Weigh in

week 8: 181.9
week 7: 182.3
Week 3: 174.6
Week 2: 175.9
Week 1: 176.6

Couch to 5K

Week 1 - 5 min warm-up 60 sec run 90 sec walk for 20 minutes
Week 2 - 5 min warm-up 90 sec run 2 min walk for 20 minutes
Week 3 - 5 min warm-up 90 sec run 90 sec walk 3 min run 3 min walk repeat once
Week 4 - 5 min warm-up 3 min run 90 sec walk 5 min run 2.5 min walk repeat once

I did it. I completed week 4. Monday I thought I'd die. That final five minutes was awful!! I was pooped the rest of that day and the following. Although to the next day's credit, I did stay up late (think 1:30 am) and then got up to take my mom to the train station at 4 am. Thankfully I was able to go back to bed when we got home, but still. Not a very restful night. I had absolutely no motivation that day and was really muscle sore. We finally made it out of the house at 6:30 to go swimming (which closed at 7pm). But I digress, I went around the entire neighborhood and passed my house in the course of the training. I walked a little bit further to cool down. When I mapped it, I had gone 1.85 miles. A 5K is 3.1 so I'll need to go twice around my neighborhood to get the job done. The boys haven't had to go run with me since we left for TX, so I have been a little anxious about that dynamic. Since Mom was still around, we all went on Monday. Aaron decided to use his bike to go around the neighborhood. I am glad Mom was there to walk with him because he was SO slow!! It will take awhile before he is really comfortable and confident.

(short side note:

I am so proud of my mom! She has decided to take the 5K challenge and began a walking regime with me. She is doing the sparkpeople.com 5 week walk to 5K program. She'll walk 3 times a week gradually adding the mileage until race day when she walks 3.1 miles/5K. I signed her up for sparkpeople so she can keep track and even seemed excited about having a food plan to follow. So far she is using it. Go Mom!!!)

When it was time to go on Wed Aaron threw such a fit that I decided to use the treadmill. Oh he was excited then!! He had to have his turn. Well, so did Jared. After falling off twice because of not following instructions, Aaron's turn was cut short. Day 2 was much better than day 1. Perhaps it was because the treadmill is nice and even compared to the neighborhood, or maybe it was that my body was ready for it. I kept my run at about 4.3 mph and my walk between 3 and 3.8 mph. I will say that the last 90 seconds of that final 5 min run were bad!! It felt like it was the longest 90 seconds of my life!!! I had set up the computer so I could watch America's Got Talent while I ran. Each performance is only 90 seconds, so I thought no big deal. Oh my goodness, time seemed to stand still!!! But, I did it. I finished it. Again. Go me! It really helped to have chubby jones' voice in my head telling me to not give up. Love her podcasts!

Today was day 3. I woke up at 7 and seriously considered going for my run outside while the boys slept. After my experience today I am kind of wishing I had :p It was about 9:30 when I finally decided to go do the treadmill. I thought Jared would be the first one up, but it was Aaron. He came down just as I was getting ready to put my shoes on. By the time I had everything set up, Jared was up. We hung out for a little bit and then I got on the machine. As soon as I started the run part, craziness broke out. I had put food and bowls on the table so the boys could get breakfast and had America's Got Talent on for us to watch. Aaron fired question/request/complaint after question/request/complaint and kept coming next to the treadmill after being warned not to come near. I am not able to run and hold a conversation. I just can't. It was so frustrating to have to talk while I ran. Finally by the end of the 5 min run Jared stepped in and explained how hard it was to talk when you are out of breath and together they went to go eat. *whew* I was not in a happy place those first 15 minutes :/ I think Monday they will have to go take it on the road with me because I can handle that much better.

All that aside, I felt pretty proud of myself. When I started the run at 4.3 I felt like it was too easy (amazingly). I realized that I needed to up the incline to mimic outdoors so I did that and it felt a little more challenging. Of course, the first interval is always the easy one for me because I am fresh, so I didn't want to push myself too hard in the beginning though I felt I could go faster. The first 5 minutes was surprising to me when I only had 30 seconds left. The phone screen had gone to sleep so I couldn't see the countdown. After it happened on the second 5 minutes I realized I really need to be able to see that because seeing the numbers help me talk myself through it. I was really tired and having a hard time catching my breath by the second 3 minutes. The 90 seconds between went way too fast. But off I went for the final 5 minutes. The screen had gone off again when I had about 2 1/2 minutes left. I told myself it was ok. I can do 2 1/2 minutes. I've got this. But soon I was starting to panic b/c I had no idea how much time or energy I had left. I quickly swiped the screen and discovered I only had 30 seconds left. Awww relief. I can do 30 seconds. I did 30 seconds plus the other 270 seconds of that run!! I walked another 7 minutes or so afterwards to cool down. When the program went off I had gone 1.95 miles in 31:32 which about a 17 min mile. I know that's not great, but I think it's pretty good for a girl who doesn't like running very much :) And now I feel pretty good. My muscles are not sore like Mon/Tues and I still have energy for other things.

My running buddy in TX called on Wed in a panic because of next week's schedule. We have 5 and 8 min running intervals ending with running for 20 minutes straight. I wouldn't really allow myself to think about that 20 minutes, only day 1 and felt confident we could handle it (although I was thinking mostly she could handle it ;)) She is repeating week 4, after having done it two times already, the rest of the week which I think gives her a slight advantage. I had been debating repeating week 4 but if I move forward that would put us back on the same week again which would be nice. I think Monday will be really hard, but I believe I *we* can do it!

Other fitness/health news:

I finally managed to get my own legit copy of P90X while I was in TX. Not just my beloved CardioX and KenpoX, but the whole shibang!! I spent yesterday morning laying in bed reading over all the guides that came with it. I am not sure I can commit to the nutrition plan side of it, but I think I could do the lean schedule. I have been trying to figure out how to balance the 5k training and P90X. P90x is a 6 days a week program, but I think I may do my own modification and run for 3 days and do the DVDs on my off days. Yesterday would have been core synergy if I'd had the guts to do it. I tried it once before and didn't finish. It was really hard and felt like it was one I couldn't do without friends. But, I am willing to give it a try once again. I know I need to do some strength training on my off days and P90x would certainly fit the bill. I have high hopes for next week being more organized and productive, so I will commit to beginning on Mon (well, run on Mon and p90x Tues). hm, or maybe I should p90x it tomorrow (core) and rest Sunday.... that may be a better option because it would put CardioX on Tues. ...

We (Matthew and I) have been invited to a formal event for his unit at the end of Sept. I am kicking myself for not being more diligent this summer. But, I have one month to give it my best! Go team Val!!

Pounding the Pavement

Wednesday I ran for the first time in a week. The drive back was really hard on my motivation. I spent the drive eating LOTS of cookies and other junk. I had planned on running Friday morning before our first leg and even at hotel stops, but it just didn't happen. I would have called it quits if it hadn't been for the fact that my running buddy bought me new running shoes right before we left. Seriously. I couldn't let her down. So Wed I got my new shoes on and got out the door. I was greeted by a cool breeze and felt positive. I decided to redo Week 3 to get me back into gear before tackling the longer runs and was pleasantly surprised at how easy and refreshing it was to be hitting the pavement. Today I again did week 3. It was harder mostly because I stopped at the beginning when we were drawn into a conversation with someone from the neighborhood. I actually look forward to trying the challenge of week 4. CRAZY!

I weighed myself on Wed after running and eating (normally prefer first thing in the morning) and was correct in guessing I'd gained 10 pounds. The Wii showed 184 = 9.4 pound increase :/ I believe most of that came on in the last week as I sat driving and eating. I weighed myself again yesterday first thing in the morning and I was at 182.4. Not great, but I believe I can get it off again as I get back into my routine. Being in a 3 story house will help a lot besides how active we've been since getting home.

I brought my bike back with me. Jared rode a lot while we were in TX and got really confident. I forgot that I'd picked up a bike for Aaron from a trash pile, so I spent some time fixing his and mine the other day. Last night we went for a family bike ride at a nearby business parking lot.  I love bike riding, plus it is great exercise going up hills :p I look forward to when Aaron is more confident too so we can actually go places on our bikes!

Besides biking and running, we've also spent a lot of time in the pool. In fact, we just got back from spending an hour there. I spent half of that time swimming back and forth across the pool and doing tricep dips on the stairs. I hope I won't be too sore tomorrow but it'll feel good anyway.

It feels good to be in my own environment again too and in control (somewhat) of what I bring in to the house. I'm able to have my green smoothies in the morning and fill the fridge with fruit and veggies. Ahh it is good to be home :)

On another note, Mom drove back with me and as a result has been forced to be more active too. I even got her to ride my bike last night :) Today she tossed around the idea of doing the 5K program as well. I printed out the 5 week walking 5K and the 8 week walk/jog rookie 5K programs from sparkpeople for her. I hope she follows through.

Where I am - Week 1 weigh in as well

While trying to figure out if I qualify for military benefits through the YMCA, I discovered a program on Military One Source called Living Lean. Is it an 12 session program designed to help you break the addiction of binging, overeating, etc aka munching. I am behind on the calendar, but for the most part I have found the tidbits I am getting are helpful. I was proud of myself yesterday when putting the chocolate chips in the pancakes that I didn't grab a handful for my mouth in the process of putting them away. I used my sentence for the week: 'I want to eat __________ and the choice is up to me.' I was able to choose not eat them.

For the most I haven't had much temptation to munch, but I've become aware of the nibbling I do while I prepare meals and also the times I want to eat because I am avoiding something that needs to be done instead. Right now I want to make the blueberry zucchini bread I've been planning to make since last Thurs because it sounds so good. I am craving it. The program says telling myself that I can't have it gives my power away. Instead I should rephrase it, I want to eat __________ and I have a choice. I can choose to live lardy or to live lean.  "My purpose for taking this program is to be continually in the vision of the benefits of Living Lean and to transform my relationship with food and eating so that Living Lean becomes a natural way of living."

In my summer reboot, the boys said they wanted to exercise with me. Well, Jared said he did but Aaron has to go along with it because he can't stay home by himself. Together we are working on the 5 week to 5K rookie run/walk program. We are on day 4. For the last two days the boys have ridden their scooters in the process while I walked and ran. I figure that is fine because they are still getting their exercise. Today was the first time that Aaron didn't give up and complain about how tired his legs were. He actually woke up at 5 am to go potty. I woke Jared up to go potty too and went back to my room. The sun rises about 5:30 so it was starting to get light out and the birds were waking up. I decided it would be a great time to run and went back to the boys' room. No surprise, they were both sitting in their beds wide awake. As soon as I opened the door Aaron said, it's morning! The birds are awake. I made the proposal for doing our run, they both whole heartedly agreed. It has made for a long day, but I think we'll finally make it to bed on time and the run was great. We all had great energy. It turns out it was a good thing we went to because it has rained the rest of the day.

We've strived for cross-training on our off days. I am grateful we chose the community with a pool because it is well utelized. I had no idea swimming would be so hard on my abs :p They are SO sore. I am not sure if it was the exercises I did on the Wii Fit or the swimming or a combination of both. This was Thurs and today they are finally not so bruised and sore feeling. We went to the pool Saturday and I couldn't believe how hard it was to float because my muscles were so achey. I didn't realize I had even used them to do that. If I can just keep it up all summer, I should be in pretty great shape by Labor Day when the pool closes.

One of the ideas I've been toying with is the raw food movement. We joined the CSA (crop share association) with the farm across the street and have so many fresh vegetables coming in weekly that I needed a way to consume them all. Juicing has been something I've been thinking about anyway, and figured if I have the resources coming in to do it, now is the time. With a little research I came across Rebootwithjoe.com. He has free meal plans ranging from 3 days to 15 days.   Today is the first day that I've really tried to follow it though not strictly. For the last two weeks I've made a green smoothie every day using the kale, collard greens, and kohlrabi leaves from the farm. I guess you could say I am leaning more toward the 'natural' side of things. EX I bought mayo over the other options because it was the most natural state despite being higher in calories and fat. I had been making my smoothies using protein powder and got to thinking that eggs might be a better option. So, I've been adding an egg or two depending on if I am sharing with the boys. It adds a lot of good flavor. Returning to my morning green smoothie has helped me feel a lot better. My skin even seems to be improving. My normal state of acne seems to be clearing - not completely, but I had some pretty large cyst starts going on. I also happened to quit using my lotion on it so that helps too I'm sure. But I feel like there is a healthier look to it all around. Jared seems to enjoy them as well.

So for today's menu, Joe's plan had a berry apple cinnamon bake for breakfast and a carrot apple ginger juice for a snack. Well, the bake takes 45 minutes so i made the juice (smoothie) for breakfast after we got back from the run and did the bake for a snack. It really satisfied that need for warm food. Lunch was a salad and sweet potato fries. I had also heated a pepperoni ham & cheese stromboli from the freezer but it had to cook longer than we thought so by the time it came out of the oven I was feeling rather full. I ate it anyway (power give away?) and felt stuffed. I found myself feeling muncher a little bit later because I was wondering what to do with the boys. Well, they've spent the last 2 hours downstairs on the computer while I've been upstairs on mine. Great family togetherness though in my defense, we've been doing stuff together since 5 am and Aaron wanted to fall asleep at 3:30. This way he is certainly staying awake :p

I like how many fresh fruits and vegetables I - we- are getting right now, but I don't know how sustainable it is long term. Some of my recipes have been a hit (no roll rolled cabbage) and some were a one hit wonder (stuffed quinoa and veggie peppers). With Matthew not helping us eat dinner, there are a LOT of leftovers to go through.

lost my train of thought due to a telephone call. So for now, here is my weigh in

April weigh in

180 something.

Yep. That's what happens when I don't exercise for two weeks and hormones and pain invade and self controls fades. I've been feeling flabbier, but I was a little surprised that I'd gained THAT much. My body is all out of whack right now and I am not sure what end is up. I'm not sure it does either. I guess there is a reason there is a general feeling that it is harder for a body to bounce back the older it gets.

I will probably repeat myself because the brain is a bit foggy these days too, but I was diagnosed with "eustachian tube dysfunction" last Friday when I went to the doctor after spending days in pain. She looked in my ear and said, "You have bubbles in your ear!" ?!?!?! Apparently the tube in my right ear quit opening and closing the way it was supposed to to drain the fluid and bubbles were created. I am now on a nasal steroid as well as a regiment of ibuprofen and tylenol to keep the pain at bay. I had been alternating them about every 3 hours, but today I could go longer so I assume this is progress. On the other side though, I am feeling more congested in my sinuses than I did last week. So either the fluid is draining from my ear and filling my sinuses, or the congestion is a gift from this beautiful land of cherry blossoms.
