First Cry
We introduced the boys to the movie Where the Red Fern Grows tonight for our family time. I thought they could identify with the main characters longing and love for his dogs. In the scene where Billy goes to hunt the ghost coon and the neighbor boys start fighting him because their dog Blue gets in a fight with Dan, Aaron said Use the ax! When the boy then gets killed by the ax as he trips, it was a wake up call that they really are dangerous and cause harm. I was surprised (and grateful) at Aaron's look of horror that the ax was a really bad idea. The best part came though at the end when Dan dies. Aaron had tears running down his face because the dog died. He told me it was a really sad movie. I was touched at the emotions it evoked in him. It is common to see him laugh or be scared, but sadness is not a feeling he expresses much. Perhaps it was the lateness of the hour, but I think the story touched him.
